Here we want to give you a few tips on how to do this and have a more amazing trip that is not just about seeing the sights but enriching yourself and locals.

As a person who has traveled extensively since I was 16, and then living in Asia for 14 years and married to a Japanese lad, I have always had my most memorable experiences engaging with locals in usually funny events or ones that culture shock kicked and I was left shaking my head wondering what had just happened.

For me the most important thing to remember is that there is good people everywhere and it is amazing how a simple smile can communicate and connect with others, that is easy and no study required.

Like any new country there is so much to learn when one walks into a foreign land.

Culture shock can come up and bite us when we are not looking and the thought that crossing anyone’s mind when they travel is . .  ..  oh no what now ?? . . . . . where is the airport.

If you are just skipping through on a tour you can make a dramatic difference to how you travel with a few tips that get you on the road to understanding and engaging with the locals – be it a few Vietnamese words thrown in to lighten a situation, a drinking session and a laugh, a smile exchanged or even the practical things that you need to know to make your stay more enjoyable.

Go forth, enjoy  ..  . . and come back with some amazing stories.
