Built by the French on the foundations of ancient Bao Thien Pagoda which was destroyed to make room for this Catholic Cathedral. Finished and opened on the 24th of December 1886 after four years of construction.
It was built to cater for its 4,000 local and French Catholics, but wasn’t an instant hit with the locals as it looked like they were in with the French to support this Colonial religion.
Imitating the design of the Notre Dame in Paris this classical style French Church reveals gothic rival style architecture.
You cannot help but notice this cathedral if you are shopping in the trendy shops in the surrounding area. This area is well known for the high quality clothing, home wares; bars, cafes and restaurants on Nha Tho Street.
Plan a look at the Cathedral as part of your time allowed for shopping.
